Power Play: Criticism – Theatre – State

Not so long ago Young theatre critics’ conference was talking about Theatre and Politics. Few years later, it comes back to a somehow similar theme, only this time we are more interested in critics’ role. Every country has some traditions and history of criticism, as everyone has the present situation of it. Of course, it has the everlasting connection with theatre makers. In addition, we chose the word “state”, which can very well resemble theatre situation in each country, depending on which meaning of the word one chooses to use. So we ask:

– What is the state of theatre criticism nowadays? Does it have any role in theatre power plays?
– Is theatre criticism important in the state? Is it important for the audience, theatre makers and does it have any influence “state level”?
– Does the theatre choose to speak critically about the state? Does it appeal to theatre critics? Maybe somewhere criticism is the permanent (or present) state of the theatre.

The 5th International theatre conference for young theatre critics “ctrl+txt” will take place from 24th till 26th of September. On the same dates Vilnius International Theatre Festival “Sirenos” will be held in Vilnius for the 12th time already. The participants of the conference will be provided with free passes to the performances of Lithuanian program of the festival, there will be an opportunity to get acquainted with the works of Lithuanian theatre directors Eimuntas Nekrošius, Oskaras Koršunovas, Artūras Areima, Olga Lapina, Gintarė Radvilavičiūtė and works by Krystian Lupa and Arpad Schilling staged with Lithuanian actors. Moreover, there will be a possibility for the participants of the conference to meet and discuss with Lithuanian theatre artists as well as theorists. This year the Conference will be moderated by Zane Kreicberga (Latvia), Ott Karulin (Estonia) and a Lithuanian representative (TBC).
